I am female, hear me word.

Tonight's npr show "A Way with Words" discussed a tricky subject. Why do we use 'woman' in some cases and 'female' in others? The caller felt that using 'female' removes the humanity and smacks heavily of Wild Kingdom or someone who is trying hard to sound official. Yet that same caller, when discussing 'woman doctor' said that she would say "I would prefer to have a doctor who is a woman." or "I would prefer not to have a male doctor". A marked difference that no one on the show, including the caller, noticed. It sounds right, doesn't it? Woman doctor and Male doctor. Man doctor. Sounds very brutish. Wonder why.
There was no resolution on the show.
